Barnyard Worship

Though most people see barns as convenient places to store farming equipment, animals, or hay, a growing number of spirit-filled folk in the rural reaches of America feel right at home attending Sunday services in a structure designed to house tractors. Typically referred to as "cowboy churches", farmers, ranchers, and even rural-riding motorcycle enthusiasts feel more at home in a barn than they do in a cathedral. Though many of these barns have been renovated with heating, air conditioning, and seating, "barn goers" feel they still possess that barnyard charm and help tie worship with the simple life of hard work, dedication to family, and serving their Creator. Outsiders may not feel that a barn is a proper place to have a church, but many parishioners in cowboy churches across the country may respond to such a sentiment with, "If a barn was good enough for baby Jesus, it's good enough for us."

Downgrading in Size. Upgrading in Value.

As a new generation either graduate from school and begin looking for a place to call home or other generations start to think differently about the homes they have, more and more individuals are considering moving into smaller houses rather than larger homes. With this down grade in size, many consider it to be an upgrade in the quality of living as they begin consuming less energy, spend much less time indoors, and typically have the ability to move these tiny home wherever they please almost at a moment's notice. Living in a home not much bigger (if not smaller) than a typical shed, these homeowners will report that they use the most of every square foot like they never have before. In this documentary about a late-twenty/early-thirty something year old, the audience is invited to experience what life is like in building their own home as well as living in a space the size of some walk-in closets. To find out more about this project and the tiny house movement, check out http://www.tiny-themovie.com/. Forget the Man Cave. How About a Man Shed?

We've all heard about the famous man caves; the one room of the house that is off limits to anyone besides the man of the house and his buddies. Well, where space is limited and utility is everything, one British man has fully utilized every square foot of man-dom in his man shed. Very into tech gadgetry, Alan Cook has transformed a 9x6 shed into a place of escape from the world; a true techie's wonderland. Along with a big screen TV and multiple gaming consoles, the shed is home to exercise equipment, a compact stereo system, his computer, and fridge stocked with beer.

How does Alan's wife feel about the man-shed? According to Wired Magazine's Gadget Lab, she says:

"I never see him anymore. But at least I get to watch what I want in the living room." Aw, how tender.

What do you get for the man that has everything? A shed to put it all in! For some of the finest sheds, pole-barns, and other exterior buildings, visit the official website of Tulsa's own Better Built Structures.

Above The Rest: The Very Best Tree Houses

For generations, children have enjoyed having an escape in their own backyards in the form of an external building. Though makeshift playhouses and forts are a fond memory for many when they think back upon their childhood, no such structure holds such memories as a tree house. From their construction to their years of enjoyment, tree houses hold a special spot in the heart's of many individuals as a place they could escape the world from and enjoy the sanctuary nestled in the tree tops. For many men, some of their first experiences with carpentry and handiness in general started with the construction of their first tree house. For many women, their first memories of home-making began with tree-top tea parties with friends; both real an imaginary. Though most individuals leave their tree houses behind as soon they grow out of them, others don't let the dream die that easy and build tree houses that fit them well into adulthood. In this post from Update Home, we take a look at some of the most amazing tree houses designed to please the inner child.

Potting Shed Metamorphosis

Who says that a shed can only be a shed? When it comes to what a shed can be, the purpose of any exterior building is completely in the eye of the beholder. For one Georgia family, their potting shed surpassed its original purpose as being just another building for storage and became the farm store they had always dreamed of. Originally, the shed became very cluttered with its stored tools and other valuables being difficult to locate. Later, the owner's had the bright idea to transform the potting shed into a quaint farm store. To read more about this shed remodel, check out the Lazy B Farmer. Barn-Raising: More Than Construction

The time-honored tradition of barn-raising is alive and well in America's Amish communities. Before the days of construction equipment necessary to lift up the frame of a barn or other large structure, entire communities would gather to help one of their local townspeople bring a large frame from the ground into a fully-standing position within just a matter of minutes. Because the Amish do not utilize much modern equipment in their building techniques, the raising of a large structure requires the elbow grease and brow-sweat of 10-to-700 local able-bodied members of the community in order to get the structure off the ground. For many, this is not simply an act of construction, but a community effort to ensure the prosperity of their fellow Amish neighbors. Taking a walk around an Amish community, one is likely to find Amish structures that were raised hundreds of years before. For more information on the tradition of barn-raising, check out the Amish America blog. The Tiny House Movement Blows Up In a Big Way

Looking to move a larger house? During this housing crisis that wasn’t exactly helped by those seeking houses larger than their budgets could allow, there has been a fast-growing movement of those wishing to simplify their lives by minimizing their square-footage. Many are calling this the “small house movement” or even the “tiny house movement.” Some believe this move towards living much more simply than the average American homeowner is a direct backlash against materialistic excess and waste. Others will claim this move towards tiny living is for the more environmentally-conscious hoping to limit their carbon footprint. Just how tiny are these tiny houses? Some of these purposely-small house dwellers build 400 square foot homes while others scale their living spaces down as much as to a staggering 76 square feet! What possibly can the advantages of this be? Well, the answers can be fairly surprising.

Think for a moment how much of your house you supply heat, air conditioning, lighting, water, and other utilities to. Now, take a second to think about how much of that space you occupy at any single moment. Your dining room is probably a separate room from your living room. You probably read books in a different room than you entertain. Are you doing more than one of these activities at once? Well, the idea behind living in a tiny house is that one space has limitless possibilities for its usage. Want to entertain over a meal? Many tiny houses are equipped with a table that folds down from the wall and then folds back flush again; hidden from view. With the table out of the way, suddenly your dining room is a living space. With a much smaller living area, one must become more resourceful, but the savings from wasteful use translates to a savings from wasteful spending. Aside from the wasted space inside, there is rarely an issue with wasted space outside; as most forms of these tiny houses are built on street-legal trailers that allow the house to be taken to any destination.
Many of these tiny house-dwellers custom build their houses to their own specifications, but those who would rather leave the design and construction to someone else, there is exploding marketplace for smaller houses. For easily under $60,000, one can buy a fully-mobile, quality-built tiny house and have it delivered to their location. For no more than $700, one can buy the plans for a house of their choosing and build it with materials purchased from their local big-box hardware store at around half the price of a fully-built tiny home. For the best in house construction, bigger is now not always better. Expand your thinking of home living and take a look at living tiny.
